Ward was the first principal.  He served from 1928 until his death in 1937.</div> <bR> <div> The first issue of the Pow Wow, the student newspaper, was published in December 1929; and the first Sequoyah, the yearbook, was published in 1931.  The use of an American Indian theme and selection of the Indian as the mascot was to honor the history of Indian tribes in the area, especially the Caddo Indians.  Indian artifacts were found on the site during the construction of the school.  </div> <bR> <div> By 1931, Fair Park's enrollment had grown so large that it became necessary to add two new wings to the original building.  One wing was for classrooms, while the other wing provided the school with an auditorium.</div> <bR> <div> During 1937-38, the annex was constructed.  With the addition of the annex, four classrooms were added to the building.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Edward Lee Alberson became principal in 1937.  Mr. Alberson served the school until his retirement in the spring of 1957.</div> <bR> <div> The Class of 1953 was the last class to start Fair Park High School as eighth graders.  At that time, junior high schools were being built in Shreveport to accommodate seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students.  Fair Park became a tenth through twelfth grade school. </div> <bR> <div> In 1956, an extensive remodeling program was undertaken.  With the completion of this construction, a new gymnasium, industrial arts area, and music building were added to the campus.  Until this addition, the basketball team had practiced and played games at the Lakeshore Junior High School gymnasium.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. E.H. Herron served as assistant principal for a number of years under Mr. Alberson.  Mr. Herron became principal in 1957 and served in this capacity until his death in the early spring of 1960.</div> <bR> <div> Dr. Earl A. McKenzie, former teacher, elementary school principal, and supervisor, was appointed principal of Fair Park in 1960.  On August 15, 1966, Dr. McKenzie left Fair Park after being named assistant to the Superintendent of Caddo Parish Schools.  He later served as Superintendent of Caddo Parish Schools.</div> <bR> <div> In 1961, the tile Indian was added to the floor in the main entry of Fair Park High School.  Mr. Hervey Sistrunk of Tri-State Tile Company designed and installed the tile Indian.  The location of the tile Indian is known as "Sacred Ground".</div> <bR> <div> In 1963, the hand carved wooden Indian was transported to Fair Park High School.  The Indian was hand carved by Mr. Greer.  The Indian was a gift to the school from the Class of 1963. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. B.H. Brantly, former teacher and assistant principal, served as principal from 1966 until his resignation on January 25, 1971.  Mr. Brantly departed Fair Park to take a position on the staff of Northeast Louisiana University.  </div> <bR> <div> Mrs. Sibyl Murphy was an assistant principal at Fair Park under Mr. Brantly.  She served as acting principal until a new principal was named.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Clem Henderson came to our school in 1948, serving as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal.  He was appointed principal of Fair Park in January 1971.  Mr. Henderson took a leave in 1976 to do post-graduate work at the University of Arkansas and retired in 1977.</div> <bR> <div> During the summer of 1971, forty-three years after the original plant was constructed, Fair Park again received a "face-lift".  Renovation, under the close supervision of Mr. Henderson, began at the close of school in May 1971, at a cost of $575,000.  When school opened in September, almost all construction had been completed.  Metal windows were installed and the exterior surface of the building was sandblasted and waterproofed.  The administrative offices were enlarged, renovated, and central heating and air-conditioning were added.  The counselors' offices were relocated, enlarged, with central heating and air- conditioning added.  To provide a more convenient location, the library was moved from the third floor to the first floor.  The library was carpeted, decorated, and new furniture was purchased.  A small addition, adjacent to the new media center, provided space for a professional library for use by faculty members during their unencumbered periods.  The teachers' lounge was carpeted, decorated, and new furniture was purchased for the area.  The interior of the school was repaired, painted, and new boilers were installed to replace the old ones that were antiquated and inadequate.  In 1974, the learning center was added to the campus.  Two large additional classrooms were made available in the gymnasium/industrial arts area when the career center (now known as the business center) opened.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Johnny Bilberry, former teacher, coach and assistant principal was named acting principal for one year in 1976 during Mr. Henderson's leave.  He was appointed principal during the summer of 1977 and left Fair Park when he was named Supervisor of Health and Physical Education in Caddo Parish in the fall of 1977.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Roland L. Antoine, Sr., former teacher, coach, and assistant principal, was appointed to the position of principal during the fall of 1977.  During his administration, in the spring of 1979, the career center was renovated to become the business center.  In 1982, a Medical Careers Magnet Program was added to the curriculum.  Mr. Antoine retired in June 1992. </div> <div> The first Director of the Medical Careers Magnet program was Ms. Marty Parker and a teacher in the program was Jennie Boyd.  The second Director of the program was Ms. Barbara Sullivan and the third Director of the program was Ms. Ruthie Adams.  The position of director was eliminated in the fall of 2010.  At that time, the Caddo Parish Schools central office attempted to close the program by cutting the funding for the Medical Careers Magnet program.  Thanks to the persistence of Mr. Curtis Hooks, Caddo Parish School Board member for District 5, and Mrs. Cathy Bonds, Director of the Fair Park High School Alumni Association funding for the program was restored in the fall of 2010.  Mrs. Cathy Bonds, Director of the Fair Park High School Alumni Association acted as recruiter for the program starting in the fall of 2010.  The position of Medical Careers Magnet secretary was cut in the spring of 2011due to a budget crisis in the Caddo Parish school system.  Until that time, Ms. Deborah Wilson had served as secretary for the program for a number of years.  </div> <bR> <div> Mr. John Dilworth, former teacher and assistant principal, became principal of Fair Park.  He served as principal from July 1992 through April 1994.</div> <bR> <div> Ms. Jean Ware was assistant principal of Fair Park at the time of Mr. Dilworth's departure.  Ms. Ware served as interim principal until a new principal was named.</div> <bR> <div> Mrs. Wanda Brooks was appointed principal in June 1994.  During her administration, the JROTC firing range building was added to the campus.  Mrs. Brooks served as principal through August 1999.  Later, she was appointed Assistant Personnel Director of Classified Personnel with Caddo Parish Schools.  </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Eddie Cooper was a teacher and an assistant principal prior to coming to Fair Park High School.  On September 21, 1989, he was appointed assistant principal of Fair Park.  He was appointed interim principal in July 1998 through August 1999, during the medical leave of Mrs. Brooks.  Mr. Cooper was appointed principal of Fair Park in September 1999.  During Mr. Cooper's administration, Fair Park High School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  In addition, the science building was added to the existing facility. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Bruce Daigle was appointed interim principal in July 2004 through July 2005, during the medical leave of Mr. Cooper.  The Caddo Parish School Board appointed Mr. Daigle principal of Fair Park High School in July 2005.  Mr. Daigle started JUMP, a program for incoming ninth grade students.  On June 27, 2008, Mr. Daigle was transferred to Northwood High School to become the principal there.  Replacing Mr. Daigle, as interim principal, was Mr. Robert Silvie, formerly assistant principal of discipline at Fair Park.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Robert Silvie became principal of Fair Park High School on October 21, 2008 and served in that position until June 2009.  Under Mr. Silvie, the office for the Fair Park High School Alumni Association was established at the school.  Among other contributions as principal, Mr. Silvie was instrumental in having students and teachers open each school day with the singing of our alma mater.  Also during his tenure, the 80th anniversary of the opening of Fair Park High School was celebrated.</div> <bR> <div> In early 2009, the Caddo Parish School Board adopted the "Caddo Plan".  Under that plan, Fair Park High School became a college preparatory academy. </div> <div>  </div> <div> Ms. Donna Marshall was appointed principal of Fair Park on May 13, 2009.  She resigned her position, as principal, June 28, 2010. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Jerry Davis was appointed principal of Fair Park High School on August 4, 2010.  Mr. Davis was moved to the Caddo Parish School Board central office as special assistant to the superintendent on October 26, 2012.  </div> <bR> <div> In 2010, under Caddo Parish School Superintendent Dr. Gerald Dawkins, the Caddo Plan was implemented.  This plan placed seventh and eighth grade students on the campus of Fair Park, Woodlawn, Huntington, Booker T. Washington, and Green Oaks high schools.  </div> <bR> <div> Mr. James Outley was appointed principal of Fair Park High School on October 26, 2012.  He remained principal until June 2014.  Under Mr. Outley, the Home Economics Department was removed from the school. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Bruce Daigle became the principal of Fair Park High School for the second time in June 2014. </div> <bR> <div> At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, seventh and eighth grade students at Fair Park High School and Woodlawn High School were returned to middle schools in the areas.  </div> <bR> <div> Even though the Fair Park High School physical plant was built in 1928, it remains both a functional and beautiful facility, standing proudly, to serve the students and the surrounding community.</div> <bR> </tD> </tR> </TABLE></B></div> <bR> <div> SCHOOL HISTORY</div> <div> FROM</div> <div> 1931 YEARBOOK</div> <bR> <div>      The sunshine of the spring of 1928 fell upon a plain, very woody-looking field on the edge of the Greenwood Road.  People passed by, gazed off into the distance, and thought nothing.  But in the autumn of the same year when the passerby looked for the old red clay terrace, there was none!  Shining in the twilight of the Indian Summer, with its tower raised toward the heavens, stood Fair Park High School in all its splendor;  for, in a comparatively short time, the high school population of Shreveport had grown from a small group in the old Hope Street Building to the two large high schools, the C. E. Byrd and the Fair Park, occupying every available space in these two magnificent school plants.</div> <bR> <div>      When Shreveport High School student body was transferred from Hope Street to the C. E. Byrd, it was only a matter of two years until that building was filled.  The School Board then looked for relief and directed its attention to the Western section of the city.  The present location of the Fair Park School was the result of a careful survey and work began immediately.  This proved to be a wise selection.</div> <bR> <div>      The building, site, and furnishings were provided at a total cost of $481,000.  The completion of the new building made possible the opening of the 1928-1929 sessions which found many Freshmen and Sophomores busily exploring the new building.  Due to the fact that schedules must be planned for the first time and many other things worked out, few extra-curricula activities were started.</div> <bR> <div>      The second year of the new school, '29 and '30, brought many changes.  Clubs sprang up on every side.  Athletics were started.  Football, basketball, baseball, and track were centers of enthusiasm.  But the high spot of the school year was the founding of the school paper, the "Pow- Wow", by the Juniors of '29 under the sponsorship of Miss Delia Munday.  As the month of May drew to a close, the B-Seniors were promoted to ll-A, and the school lacked only one half grade being complete.</div> <bR> <div>      In the fall of '30, the state inspector made a visit to Fair Park, and by the addition of 11-A course, the school became accredited.  The "Pow-Wow" advanced two steps toward recognition by becoming a member of Quill and Scroll Society and the National Journalism Society.  Football took its merits by winning more than half the games of a stiff schedule.  As a memorial, the "Sequoyah" was published by the Seniors of '31.  As times flies from year to year, and students go from the floors of Fair Park out into life, may the honors which they have reaped for their Alma Mater seem doubly blessed. </div> <bR> <div> Edith Bailey</div> <bR> <div> Edith Bailey was the President of the Class of 1931 and later taught English at Fair Park High School. </div> <bR> <DIV ALIGN="LEFT"></DIV> <div> <B><IMG SRC="070f4520.jpg" border=0 width="500" height="338" ALIGN="BOTTOM" HSPACE="0" VSPACE="0"></B></div> <bR> <div> <A HREF="#top" TITLE="FPAlumni 3"><U>Top</U></A></div> <bR> <div> HISTORY </div> <div> OF</div> <div>  FAIR PARK HIGH SCHOOL</div> <bR> <bR> <div> Fair Park High School is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Construction of Fair Park began in the spring of 1928 and opened for the first students in the fall of 1928. The name came from a near-by residential area known as Fair Park and the school's location across from the Louisiana State Fair Grounds.</div> <bR> <div> The original building, located on a 10-acre site, was designed to accommodate 500 students. However, by 1929 the school's enrollment was over 700. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. J.W. Ward was the first principal and served from 1928 until his death in 1937.</div> <bR> <div> The first issue of the Pow Wow, student newspaper, was published in December 1929; and the first Sequoyah, the yearbook, was published in 1931. The use of an American Indian theme and selection of Indian as the mascot was due to the history of Indian tribes, especially the Caddo, in the area and location of artifacts on the building site.  </div> <bR> <div> By 1931, Fair Park had grown so much that it became necessary to add two new wings to the original building.  One wing was for classrooms while the other provided the school with a greatly needed auditorium.</div> <bR> <div> During 1937 - 38, the annex, consisting of four classrooms, was added.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Edward Lee Alberson became principal in 1937 and served the school until his retirement in the spring of 1957.</div> <bR> <div> In 1956, an extensive remodeling program was undertaken with completion of a new gym and  </div> <div> industrial arts area and a music building. Until then, the basketball team had practiced and played games at the Lakeshore Junior High gym.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. E.H. Herron, who for a number of years served as assistant principal, became principal in 1957 and served in this capacity until his death in the early spring of 1960.</div> <bR> <div> Dr. Earl A. McKenzie, former teacher, principal and supervisor, became principal in 1960 and left Fair Park when he was named assistant to the Superintendent of Caddo Parish School on August 15, 1966. He later served as superintendent.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. B.H. Brantly, former teacher and assistant principal, served as principal from 1966 until his resignation January 25, 1971 to take a position on the staff of Northeast Louisiana University. During his tenure, he took a leave of absence, and Mrs. Sibyl Murphy, an assistant principal, served as acting principal.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Clem Henderson, who came to Fair Park in 1948 and served as a teacher, coach and assistant principal, assumed the principalship in January 1971. He took a leave in 1976 to do post-graduate work at the University of Arkansas and retired in 1977.</div> <bR> <div> During the summer of 1971, forty-three years after the original plant was constructed, Fair Park again received a "face-lifting."  Renovation, under the close supervision of Mr. Henderson, began at the close of school in May 1971, and cost of $575,000.  When school opened in September, almost all construction was completed.  Metal windows were installed and the exterior surface of the building was sandblasted and waterproofed.  The administrative offices were renovated, enlarged, centrally heated and air conditioned.  The counselors' offices were relocated, enlarged and air conditioned.  The library was moved from the third floor to the first floor to provide a more convenient location; and was refurnished, carpeted and redecorated.  A small addition adjacent to the new media center provided space for a professional library for use by faculty members during their unencumbered periods.  Two large additional classrooms were made available in the gymnasium/industrial arts area when the career center opened.  These were assigned for beginning typewriting classes.  The interior of the building was repaired, painted, and new boilers were installed to replace the old ones that were antiquated and inadequate.  The teachers' lounge area was refurnished, redecorated, and carpeted. In 1974, the learning center was added. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Johnny Bilberry, former teacher, coach and assistant principal was named acting principal for one year in 1976 during Mr. Henderson's leave.  He was appointed principal during the summer of 1977 and left Fair Park when he was named Supervisor of Health and Physical Education in Caddo Parish in the fall of 1977.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. Roland L. Antoine, Sr., former teacher, coach, and assistant principal, was appointed to the position of principal during the fall of 1977.  During his administration, the learning center was renovated to the business center in the spring of 1979.  A Medical Careers Program was added to the curriculum, with appropriate renovations including air conditioning in 1982.  Mr. Antoine retired June 1992.</div> <bR> <div> Mr. John Dilworth, former teacher and assistant principal became principal of Fair Park in July 1992 through April 1994.</div> <bR> <div> Mrs. Wanda Brooks was appointed principal in June 1994.  During her administration, the JROTC firing range was added to the school.  Mrs. Brooks served as principal through August 1999.  Later, she was appointed assistant personnel director of classified personnel with the Caddo Parish School Board.  </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Eddie Cooper was a teacher and an assistant principal prior to coming to Fair Park High School.  On September 21, 1989, he was appointed assistant principal of Fair Park.  He was appointed interim principal in July 1998 through August 1999, during a medical leave of Mrs. Brooks.  Mr. Cooper was appointed principal of Fair Park in September 1999.  During Mr. Cooper's administration, the school building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and the science wing was added to the existing facility. </div> <bR> <div> Mr. Bruce Daigle was appointed interim principal in July 2004 through July 2005, during a medical leave of Mr. Cooper.  The Caddo Parish School Board appointed Mr. Daigle principal of Fair Park High School in July 2005.  Mr. Daigle started JUMP, a program for incoming ninth grade students.  On June 27, 2008, Mr. Daigle was transferred to Northwood High School to become the principal there.  Replacing Mr. Daigle, as interim principal, was Mr. Robert Silvie, formerly assistant principal of discipline at Fair Park.</div> <bR> <bR> <div> Mr. Robert Silvie became principal of Fair Park High School October 21, 2008 and served in that position until June 2009.  Under Mr. Silvie, the office for the Fair Park High School Alumni Association was established at the school.  Among other contributions as principal, Mr. Silvie was instrumental in having everyone stand and sing the alma mater each morning. Also during his tenure, the 80th anniversary of the opening of Fair Park High School was celebrated.</div> <bR> <div> In early 2009, the Caddo Parish School Board adopted the "Caddo Plan". L. Alberson, principal.  The honor Legion, a service organization both to Fair Park and the community, supported the Fair Park teams, performed at football and basketball games, and represented the school in parades and in civic projects.  The colors of the organization, scarlet red, white, and horizon blue, were carried out in the uniforms, which are patterned after those of the original French Foreign Legion.  The French theme was adopted because Louisiana was once a French territory.  First Honor Legion Officers were Josephine Carbone, Colonel and Mary Ann Leon, Lieutenant Colonel.  Honor Legion Social Officers were Jo Van Dyke, President;  Gwen Brown,  Treasurer;  Suzanne Griffin, Secretary:  and Sandy McCalla, Vice President.   </div> <div> The Drum and Bugle Corps and flags add much color to the Honor Legion.  The flags excelled in precision flag drills, and the Drum and Bugle Corps were admired for their marching as well as musical ability.  The Drum and Bugle Corps practiced every day of the week.  </div> <div> At mid-term of every year, any Fair Park girl was eligible to try out for membership in the Honor Legion.  The members were selected on marching ability, overall appearance, and character.  The final approval came from the members and the screening committee, composed of past officers.  The organization was composed of Companies "A", "B", "C", and "D".</div> <div> In the year 1957, the Honor Legion represented Fair Park at several out-of-town games and parades.  A spectator at the Baton Rouge - Fair Park football game in Baton Rouge complimented the "Legion" in a letter to The Shreveport Times.  "It was the finest display we have ever witnessed at a high school game in Baton Rouge," he said.  The organization was composed of Companies "A", "B", "C", and "D".</div> <bR> <div> From the 1963 Yearbook:</div> <div> One of Fair Park most readily recognized groups, the Honor Legion, brightened Shreveport's parades, and performed at football and basketball games.  Mrs. Norma Lindsey and Mr. Alberson founded the Honor Legion in 1955.  In 1963, the Honor Legion was under the direction of Miss Ira K. Long.</div> <div> Known for its fast stepping and colorful traditional uniforms, the marching pep squad spent long and hard hours during the summers and school year to perfect drills.  The Honor Legion was composed of Companies "A" and "B".</div> <bR> <bR> <bR> <div> From the 1963 Yearbook:</div> <div> Honor Legion girls don new uniforms.  </div> <div> The Honor Legion founded in 1955 by Mrs. Norma Lindsey and Mr. E. A. Alberson, was one of Fair Park's most readily recognized groups.  Three years under the direction of Miss Ira K. Long, the pep squad lightened parades by its snappy step and performed at football games and basketball games.</div> <div> In 1963, the pep squad changed from the traditional uniform to one of gold blazers and white pleated skirts.  To help pay for uniforms and sponsor the annual spring trip, certain projects, such as candy sales and license plate sales, were undertaken and had great success.</div> <div> Officers of the Honor Legion in 1964 were Jenice Reyenga, Colonel; Jackie Lockard, Lieutenant Colonel; and Mary McIlwain, Lieutenant Colonel.  The Flag Line and Drum and Bugle Corps remained a part of the organization until the end. </div> <div> I963 was the final year of the Honor Legion at Fair Park High School.</div> <bR> <div> From the 1965 Yearbook:</div> <div> In the summer of 1965, the Arrowettes were formed.  The Arrowettes was the name given to the new pep squad.  Sponsored by Miss Ira K. May  2010</div> <bR> <bR> <div> Information: </div> <div> The Fair Park High School Alumni Association held its annual luncheon for members on Saturday, May 1, 2010.  The luncheon was at the El Chico Mexican Restaurant in Madison Park Shopping Center, Shreveport, Louisiana.  These gatherings are a good time for Fair Parkers of all ages to get to know each other.  All in attendance had a very enjoyable time.   </div> <bR> <div> If your class is planning a reunion and you would like to have information concerning the event posted on the Alumni Association's website, please send the information to CathyRBonds@aol.com.  Reunion information will be posted on the website under the heading of "Future Pow Wows".</div> <div>        </div> <div> Around the Reservation: </div> <div> The spring semester is always a busy time with testing, awards programs, graduation preparation for seniors, and much more. </div> <bR> <div> In the parish wide Character Education Week Essay Competition, Fair Parker James Collins took the top award for 9th graders.  Other winners from Fair Park were Maurice Hill, Brandon Smith, and Leonidas Brossette.  The senior winner for the overall trophy in the competition was Stacy Henry of Fair Park.  Congratulations to all of our winners. </div> <bR> <div> The Louisiana High School Athletic Directors' Association met in Baton Rouge in late January.  Fair Park's Athletic Coordinator, Ms. Maggie Hill, was named Athletic Coordinator of the Year. </div> <div> Congratulations to Ms. Hill.  We thank her for her many years of dedicated service to the students of Fair Park.</div> <bR> <div> Caddo Parish recently received a PEP (Physical Education Programs) Grant for $473,902.00.  Schools participating in the grant are Fair Park, Green Oaks, BTW, Woodlawn, four middle schools and four elementary schools.  The Project Director of the grant is Kaye Jolly Cochran, Fair Park Class of 1969.  We sincerely thank Kaye for bringing the workshops for this grant to the Fair Park campus.  Those attending the workshop included twenty-seven physical educators and the presenters. The program will enhance physical education programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and help students meet the state standards for physical education.  You will be hearing more about this grant in future newsletters. </div> <bR> <bR> <div> A spiritual conference was held again this year at Little Union Baptist Church.  Coach Charles Thrash took a group of thirty young men from Fair Park to the conference.  They joined other young men from Huntington, Green Oaks, and Booker T. Washington High Schools at the gathering.</div> <bR> <div> Quickly seeing the need, on January 14, 2010, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the Fair Park JROTC launched a drive to do their part to help the people in need.  Members of the student body and faculty were asked to help with the collection of cash, food, and clothing.  All clothing was sent to the Red Cross.  Food and money was sent to the U. S. State Department to be forwarded to Haiti.  On January 30, 2010, the Fair Park JROTC held their annual Dining In at the NCO Club on Barksdale Air Force Base.  The JROTC Military Ball was held earlier in the year.  In a recent parish wide JROTC academic competition, our cadets finished in fifth place moving up from ninth place last year. In other competition, our JROTC placed 1st in the Spring Drill Team Competition Armed Inspection and 3rd in the Junior Varsity Team Color Guard Competition. The annual troop review for Fair Park was held in March, with the Fair Park cadets receiving high marks. Looking forward to the next school year, in early May, the JROTC conducted a Change of Command Ceremony. Parents and teachers were invited to attend as the new leadership officially received their rank.  The very capable leaders are already busy making plans for the next school year.  The Fair Park JROTC and instructors are a vital part of activities on our campus.  Congratulations to our cadets and instructors on a job well done. </div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park Student Government Association has worked very diligently this year under the fine leadership of Mrs. Chandra Phillips.  In January, the leadership of the SGA attended their convention at Captain Shreve High School.  This year, the student leadership group conducted two very successful blood drives.  Thanks to the large participation from the students and faculty, the SGA received awards for these successful drives. During the year, the SGA assisted in a number of activities around the school and represented our school at community events.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park Tennis team, coached by David Snow, had a 7-1 record this season.  The team played in the State competition and lost in the quarter final round.</div> <bR> <div> The Girls' Softball team continued to show improvement this year.  We are hopeful by next season the team will be playing on their own softball field on our campus.  </div> <bR> <div> Coach Giles and the Girls' Track team finished the season as the District Runner-Up. Avery Toliver was the long jump champion. </div> <bR> <div> The Boys' Track team, coached by Lent Bursey, completed the year in 3rd place in the District. Andres Toliver won the 4x1 and 4x2 relays and the long and triple jumps.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park Baseball team, Coached by John Levy, Assistant Coach, Don Levy, and assisted by retired Fair Park math teacher, Joe Levy, had a very busy year.  The team collaborated with Shreveport Green in their Adopt-A-Street Program, volunteering their time to pick up litter along the four blocks of San Jacinto Street bordering our campus.  On Arbor Day, the Levy brothers and the baseball team planted several trees on our campus, with Shreveport Green donating the trees. Working with the Alumni Association, Coach John Levy, collaborated with the Shreveport/Bossier Captains Baseball team to play Huntington High School at Fair Grounds Field.  The Captain's management allowed the Fair Park baseball team to keep the admission fee from the evening to use for their baseball program.  This was an opportunity for the team to play at a larger stadium and tour the facilities.  Working with the Alumni Association, the Captains, and Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurant, the baseball team and coaches enjoyed dinner after the game at the restaurant in Bossier City.  We thank the Captains and Buffalo Wild Wings for this very generous donation.  Our baseball team also enjoyed a Saturday trip to Grambling University to tour the campus and enjoy a spring football game.       </div> <bR> <div> For twenty-two years, Mrs. Beatrice Maxile has been taken students to Washington D. C. through the Close Up Program.  Close Up is a structured student study program.  The purpose of the program is to give students from around the country the opportunity to meet in seminars and learn how our government works.  Students also have an opportunity to visit sites in the capitol city and meet with government officials. We thank Mrs. Maxile for her many years of dedicated service to Fair Park students.  </div> <bR> <div> For Teacher Appreciation this year, Leo and Myrna Sanford (Class of 1947 and 1946) donated very large Red Delicious apples for all employees.  Wade and Cathy Bonds (Class of 1964 and 1966) donated candy bars for everyone.  </div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association, again, provided medals for the Honor's Day Celebration.  Students were awarded medals for the Honor Roll and Principal's List.  The guest speaker for the occasion was Mr. Cleveland White, Director of Personnel Caddo Parish Schools and former band director at Fair Park.</div> <div>   </div> <div> The 18th Annual Career and Technical Education Employer Appreciation Banquet (DECA) was held in March at the East Ridge Country Club.  A number of Fair Park students and their teacher, Ms. Cassandra Howard, attended.  The great Fair Park Jazz Band provided music for the event.      </div> <div>          </div> <div> May 10, 2010, was the day for the National Honor Society candlelight induction ceremony, with sixteen students becoming members of the society. This is always a very impressive and meaningful service for all in attendance.  Following the induction, a reception for members, inductees, and parents was held in the library.  Among other activities, this group of scholars assisted with the College and Career Fair and the Open House for 8th Graders held on our campus. The Honor Society is under the sponsorship of Mrs. Carol McInnis and Mrs. Inell Prealow, our Fair Park librarians. </div> <bR> <div> For the first time in seven years, The Sequoyah was published.  Our sincere thanks to Calumet Lubricants for the seed money needed to start the project. The yearbook was a joint effort, the editor was Ms. April McCalister, senior English teacher and the Alumni Association sold advertisements for the book. A traditional signing party was held when the books arrived. It is our hope the students will be able to build on this project next year. </div> <bR> <div> This was the first year for the Fair Park College and Career Fair.  Mrs. Ora Hamilton, freshman counselor, suggested the idea of a College and Career Fair and plans were soon underway for the event. Mrs. Hamilton, Ms. Loretta Speed, Instructional Program Facilitator, Major Alston, JROTC, and Mrs. Cathy Bonds, Alumni Association were the primary team for the event.  The event was well attended, with 38 representatives present.  The participants were from community colleges, colleges, universities, businesses, and the armed forces. All students in the school had an opportunity to tour the booths, talk with representatives, and gather information.   Mayor Glover of Shreveport, along with officials from the Caddo Parish Schools central office attended the fair.  As the fair progressed in the gym, there was a parental involvement meeting in the auxiliary gym.  Later the parents joined the students in touring the booths.  This will become an annual event on the Fair Park campus.         </div> <bR> <div> In April, Fair Park held an Open House for 8th Graders. The freshman counselor invited 8th grade students from our feeder schools to attend.  Fair Park t-shirts were provided for each student to wear the day of the Open House.  The Fair Park band was playing as the visitors stepped from their busses.  Guests were greeted by cadets from the JROTC, acting as mentors for the visitors.  A program was held in the auditorium for the guests, current 9th grade students, and their teachers attending.  Awards were given to the top 9th grade students and senior scholar athletes. Gifts were given to the 9th grade teachers.  After the program in the auditorium, JROTC cadets took the 8th graders on a tour of Fair Park.  The group reassembled in the gym for performances by the cheerleaders, flag line, Show Stoppers Step Team, JROTC Color Guard, and Drill Team. The evening before the event, a group of alumni, (Patsy Foster and Cathy Bonds, Class of 1966, and Doug Holland Class of 1965), had assembled a 15' tepee, giving the gym a reservation feeling.  Guests were given a book bag containing the history of Fair Park High School, the Alma Mater, and a packet of forms.  Lunch was served from the concession stand in the gym.  After lunch, students toured displays set up by the Medical Careers Program, campus organizations, and clubs.  This display gave the 8th grade students an opportunity to see what will be available to them next year at Fair Park.    </div> <bR> <div> The Athletic Banquet was held in late May with athletes from every sport attending.  A number of people, including Coach Charles Thrash, worked to make this event a reality. Food and paper goods for the event were donated by Brookshire Food Store, Chester Kelley's Crescent Landing Restaurant (Chester Kelley Class of 1963), Loretta Speed, the Levy brothers, and Wade and Cathy Bonds (Class of 1964 and 1966).  The Fair Park Hospitality Club, sponsored by Ms. Linda Jones, served the meal. Stromile Swift (Class of 1998) donated funds to purchase a participation trophy for each athlete and certificates were awarded to outstanding athletes.  Fair Park graduate and two time medal winning Olympian, Hollis Conway (Class of 1985), was the guest speaker for the luncheon.   </div> <bR> <div> For the first time, all Caddo Parish high school graduations were held in the Shreveport Convention Center on Caddo Street.  We would like to thank Ms. Howard, senior class sponsor, and Ms. Marshall, principal, for inviting the Alumni Association to take part in the ceremony. Fourteen members of the Alumni Association participated in the graduation exercise.  The alumni marched in following the faculty as a show of support for our graduates.  We sincerely thank Ms. Howard and Ms. Marshall for this opportunity.  </div> <bR> <div> In the fall, Fair Park will once again have a Debate Team.  Ms. McDonald will be the team's sponsor and Ms. Loretta Speed will assist with the team.  Kevin Speed, son of Ms. Speed, has donated funds and purchased travel and computer bags for team members to use.</div> <bR> <div> Projects:</div> <div> The Fair Park library was in need of a new video camera and memory card.  The Alumni Association acquired funds from Calumet Lubricants for the purchase the camera and card.  We thank Calumet for another generous gift for our students and school.</div> <bR> <div> We thank Gerry Woolman (Class of 1973) for his contribution to the medals for the Honor Roll and Principal's List used at the Honor's Day Program.  </div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association provided partial funding for the Fair Park College and Career Fair.</div> <bR> <div> For the Open House for 8th Graders, the Alumni Association provided Indian head pins as awards for the senior scholar athletes, eagle medals for the outstanding 9th graders, gifts for teachers, and partial funding for t-shirts for the event.  Mt. Black, Sgt. Mosley, and Sgt. Summage.  This year, Fair Park's Veterans Day program was marked by the presentation of a poster from the Classes of 1940, 1941, and 1942, listing the names of Fair Parkers killed during World War II.  The framed poster, given to the Alumni Association, will be on display in the school.   We thank Alice and Dallas Greene for their efforts in having the poster printed and the Classes of 1940, 1941 and 1942 for this gift.  It is a beautiful memorial to these brave young men. This year the keynote speaker for the program was The Honorable Jackson B. Davis.  Senator Davis served in the Louisiana Senate for twenty-four years and was at Pearl Harbor the day of the attack. Special guests at the event were family members of several of the fallen soldiers and retired Fair Park counselor Jolene Tabler.  Mrs. Tabler's husband died serving our country in the Vietnam War. </div> <bR> <div> We congratulate the JROTC.  The JROTC recently entered several parish wide competitions and won numerous awards for the school.</div> <bR> <bR> <div> The Fair Park Band, along with a number of staff and faculty, took advantage of the coupon offer mentioned in the previous newsletter and had dinner at Crescent Landing Catfish Restaurant.  With the fifteen percent rebate, the band was able to add to their treasury and enjoyed a nice evening.         </div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park basketball season is underway for girls and boys.  The head coach for the boys' team is Ron Preston and the head coach for the girls' team is Charles Thrash.  We thank these gentlemen for their time and dedication to the players on the teams.</div> <bR> <div> Projects:</div> <div> At the end of the first nine-week grading period, the Alumni Association purchased medals for all students listed on the Honor Roll and Principal's List.  These medals were awarded at a special school assembly. For the third year, we thank Gerry Woolman for aiding in the funding of this project.   </div> <bR> <div> Four students, selected by their teachers, were named "Students of the Month".  These students were awarded the Alumni Association's Indianhead lapel pins. The "Student of the Month" award is based on academic excellence and attendance.  </div> <bR> <div> Donations:</div> <div> James Flakes (Head Custodian) donated a class photograph for the Medical Careers Magnet Class of 1989-1990.</div> <bR> <div> Maggie Ross Hill (Athletic Coordinator) contributed to our collection by adding a copy of the Fair Park High School Homecoming Program dated 2004.</div> <bR> <div> Richard Zachery (1945) donated a copy of the first yearbook, dated 1931.</div> <bR> <div> Carol McInnis (Librarian) made a valuable contribution to our memorabilia collection with the donation of the original framed charter for the Fair Park High School National Honor Society.</div> <bR> <div> Rick Woodson (1959) recently donated Pow Wows dated September 25, 1958, October 17, 1958, November 26, 1958, February 13, 1959, and April 24, 1959.  Rick also donated a copy of his book titled Words of Woodson, containing 40 years of Woodson's sports columns, published in 2007.  In the September 1958 issue of the Pow Wow, there was an article about the formation of the National Honor Society at Fair Park.  Mrs. Margaret McKenzie, Mrs. Ruth S. Johns and Mr. Lewis E. Day organized the Honor Society later that school year, in the spring of 1959. </div> <bR> <div> Jean Ware (Supervisor of Math for Caddo Parish) donated two Pow Wows dated October 1981 and December 1981.  Pictured in the October 1981 issue was the Class of 1931 at their fifty-class reunion. This year enrollment stands at approximately 735 students.  Prior to the arrival of students, the Alumni Association hosted our "Welcome Back to School" by distributing apples to all employees.  For the third year, we thank County Market on Greenwood Road for their very generous donation of beautiful red apples.</div> <bR> <div> Our list of Fair Park graduates receiving football scholarships to LSU continues to grow.  Bobby Greene (1945) received a football scholarship to LSU but decided to play professional baseball instead. A broken ankle abruptly ended his baseball career.</div> <bR> <div> Event:  </div> <div> Homecoming at Fair Park - The theme for this year's event will be "It's Our Time to Shine".  Homecoming activities will start with the Coronation of the Homecoming Court on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fair Park gymnasium.  On Friday, October 23, 2009, Homecoming Day will start with a breakfast at 9:00 a.m. in the school's cafeteria.  A $10.00 donation is requested for the event, payable in the main office the morning of the breakfast.  Please make your reservations for the breakfast by calling the Fair Park office at 318-635-8181.  Late afternoon on October 23rd there will be a pep rally in the Fair Park gymnasium.  The Homecoming Football Game, Fair Park vs. Logansport, will be played on our home field, Independence Stadium. Williams is a two-time All-District and two-times honorable mention All-City selection.</div> <bR> <div> For the first time in our history, there was a 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony at Fair Park.  The JROTC did an outstanding job of planning and executing the program.  The keynote speaker for the event was the Honorable Cedric B. Glover, Mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana.  Guest included State Senator Lydia Jackson, State Representative Roy Burrell, parish and city officials, representatives from the Shreveport fire and police departments, and Caddo Parish School system officials. Our thanks to everyone involved for the very moving service.  </div> <bR> <div> The Student Government Association recently participated in the Life Share Blood Drive.  The SGA had as their goal the donation of 67 pints of blood. At the end of the day, students and teachers contributed 74 pints of blood in this very worthwhile effort.  There will be two more blood drives this school year, one in January and the last in April.  If the goal is achieved each time, a qualifying senior will receive a $500.00 scholarship.  Everyone, including the alumni, is invited to participate.  We thank Mrs. Phillips, SGA sponsor, for the many hours of work and guidance she provides to our students in this organization.      </div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park baseball coach and team are participating in the Shreveport Green Adopt-A-Street Program.  The team is responsible for keeping San Jacinto Street clean, between Claiborne and Jackson.  We applaud the team for their public service work.     </div> <bR> <div> Projects: </div> <div> On behalf of the Fair Park Medical Careers Magnet Program, the Alumni Association recently made a request to Willis Knighton Health Care System for equipment to aid our students and teachers in this valuable program. Within ten days of the formal request, a Willis Knighton truck delivered all of the equipment requested.   Their very generous donation included an electric hospital bed and mattress, a patient care simulator manikin, an auscultation simulator manikin, a wheelchair, and a walker.  It is our desire to continually improve and expand our very important and much needed Medical Careers Magnet Program at Fair Park.  </div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association was involved in bringing about the partnership between the Shreveport/Bossier Captains baseball team and the Fair Park baseball team.  The Captains will donate any equipment they are unable to use to the Fair Park team.  In addition, arrangements have been made for Fair Park's baseball team to play Caddo Magnet High School's team in the Captains stadium on April 8, 2010.  Half of the ticket sales from that game will go to the Fair Park baseball program.  More information will be available as game time approaches.  We hope to see everyone at the game! </div> <bR> <div> Chester Kelley, (1963) and owner of Crescent Landing Catfish Restaurant, has offered a great way for everyone to be able to help the Fair Park Band.  Chester has provided coupons for use in his restaurant.  When going to Crescent Landing for dinner, present the coupon to the server before ordering and 15% of the bill, excluding tax and gratuity will be donated to Fair Park for the benefit of the band. The offer is good on Friday nights only, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m... Oh, what a grand school we have!  How proud of it we are! The theme for Fair Park will be College Prep. The Fair Park High School Alumni Association welcomes Ms. Donna Marshall as principal. Ms. Marshall comes to us from Seattle, Washington, by way of Atlanta, Georgia. She was a high school principal in Seattle until her retirement. After retirement, Ms. Marshall moved to Atlanta to join her family and has done consulting work in Caddo Parish prior to being named principal of Fair Park. The Alumni Association looks forward to working with Ms. Marshall to aid the students, staff, faculty, and our school.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park High School Alumni Association thanks Mr. Robert L. Silvie, former Principal and Assistant Principal, for his years of service and love for Fair Park and her students. We proudly add these names to our list of Fair Parkers receiving LSU football scholarships: Gus Miciotto (1943), Charlie Glover (1951), Don Stinson (1951), and John Scotto (1958).</div> <bR> <div> There was good news for our school when test scores were reported.  Overall, Fair Park students showed a marked improvement in their scores over the previous year.</div> <div>  </div> <div> In May of this year, it was a great honor for our school and JROTC to receive the United States Flag that had flown over Bagdad, Iraq on November 15, 2008.  The flag was presented to Major Alston, head of the Fair Park JROTC, and our cadets, in a formal ceremony on the Fair Park JROTC Drill Pad.  The presentation was made by an officer from Fort Hood, TX. The Alumni Association takes this opportunity to sincerely thank all veterans and those currently serving in uniform for their service to our country. These items were certainly needed by Fair Park.</div> <bR> <div> For the second time in as many years, Lisa Davis contributed twenty Sonic Gift Certificates for the Kindness Award Project.  These certificates are awarded to students, selected by teachers, for random acts of kindness on the Fair Park campus. The class leaders were told that the school was in need of a lawn mower to maintain the sports fields and the entire lawn (the lawns of Caddo Parish schools are cut on a parish wide rotating basis by the Caddo Parish School System). Funds were raised from the class and a riding mower was purchased and given to the school.  That mower is still being used today. This gift enables Mr. Flakes, Head Custodian, and Mr. Rodney, Assistant Custodian, to mow our lawn more often and maintain the beauty of our campus. We thank Mr. Flakes and Mr. Rodney for their hard work. Weather permitting, our lawn is mowed and edged weekly.  </div> <div>      </div> <div> About the same time, a group of graduates offered to supply cinder blocks to build the much needed dugouts for the Fair Park Baseball Field.  The blocks were delivered and the Fair Park coaches constructed and painted the current dugouts. </div> <bR> <div> From the beginning of the Alumni Association, Jimmy Stockard (1953) has donated the web site for the Fair Park High School Alumni Association.  We appreciate this donation and his many hours of work on our site. James Farrar was the Head Coach of these teams. We thank Mrs. Tabler, Senior Counselor, for working with our students to acquire these funds. </div> <bR> <div> The Junior/Senior Prom was held at the Barksdale Air Force Base NCO Club, with a large number of students and faculty attending. It was a beautiful event.</div> <bR> <div> Ms. Ruthie Adams, Head of the Medical Careers Magnet Program, hosted the Medical Careers Banquet on the Fair Park campus.  </div> <bR> <div> As the school year came to an end, a good time was had by all at the Seniors vs. Faculty Basketball Game. The Senior Class Picnic was a time of relaxation for students and teachers alike with plenty of good food and fun.  The same was true for the Special Ed. Student Picnic.</div> <bR> <div> The traditional Honor Society Candlelight Induction Ceremony was held in the school auditorium, inducting fifteen new members. The team went to regionals in Monroe, LA but unfortunately lost in the first round. The matches were very close, showing great potential for our young team in the coming year.</div> <bR> <div> Our Lady Indians Track Team enjoyed a good season with Head Coach Michael Jiles and Assistant Coach, Pamela Williams.</div> <bR> <div> The Men's Track Team, with Head Coach Lent Bursey, had an outstanding year, winning two events in the State meet held in Baton Rouge.  Morris Claiborne won the 100 meter event and the 4x100 relay event was won by Harold Castle, Desmon Hill, Kenneth Young and Morris Claiborne. </div> <bR> <div> Win or lose, Fair Park was well represented on the fields this year.  Several of us attending the games heard the supporters for the opposing teams remark on the excellent sportsmanship shown by our players and coaches.  It is how you play the game that counts; they were excellent ambassadors for the school.  Another great year of Fair Park sports!</div> <bR> <div> Reflections:</div> <div> The Class of 1931 published the first yearbook in the history of Fair Park. The name of that yearbook, Sequoyah, was proposed by our first principal, Mr. Ward.  Mr. Ward suggested the name Sequoyah because of the great work done by this Cherokee Indian born in Tennessee and living from about 1760 to 1843. Sequoyah labored long and tirelessly to create the Cherokee alphabet, made up of 85 characters.  He also traveled a wide area and taught this alphabet to his people. It was well attended by parents and students.</div> <bR> <div> Wednesday, February 4, 2009 was an exciting day on the Fair Park campus.  Our quarterback, Morris Claiborne, signed to play football with LSU.  With his signing, Morris became the 20th person to leave Fair Park for LSU on a football scholarship. Other included: Charles Barney and Ralph Hunt (1943), James Powell and Ray Collins (1945), Lee Hedges (1947), Gene Hedges and Joe May (1951), Tommy Davis and Harley Brown (1952), Mike Pharis and Phil Johnson (1963), Tommy Youngblood (1965), Bobby Joe King (1967), John King (1970), Wendell Davis (1984), Pat Rogers (1993), Reggie Robinson (1998), and Ronnie Prude (2001).  Four of the above became professional players: Ray Collins, Tommy Davis, Wendell Davis, and Ronnie Prude. See photos on the web site at www.geauxto.com/fpalumni  </div> <bR> <div> Projects:</div> <div> The Alumni Association has been involved in several projects recently.  The Fair Park Lady Indians Basketball Team was in need of new uniforms.  Contributors to this project were Calumet Lubricants, Jane Caruthers (1958), Margaret Embry (1955), Janet (1969) and Steve Mc Donald (1968), Glenn Price (1947), Carolyn Webb (1956), and Gerry Woolman (1973).</div> <bR> <div> Fair Park now has a Lady Indians Softball Team and they also had a need for new uniforms.  Charles Farrar (1952) and his wife Lucy donated the funds for this project.</div> <bR> <div> This is the third year the Alumni Association has funded letter jackets. The jackets are given to girls and boys participating in all sports for two or more years, with one jacket per student while at Fair Park.  The students are selected by the coaches.  This year the Association will award twenty-five jackets to our students. Those contributing to this project are Jane Caruthers (1958), Wendell Davis (1984), Martha and Clem Henderson (Faculty and Administration), George Khoury (1946), Don "Moon" Mullins (1957), and Myrna (1946) and Leo Sanford (1947). </div> <bR> <div> Our thanks go to each contributor to these projects and our corporate neighbor. It would not be possible for the students to have these uniforms and jackets without your help.  Your gifts aid in instilling pride in our students and school.   </div> <bR> <div> Donations:</div> <div> Josephine Butler Allen (1945 and faculty) recently made a valuable contribution to our memorabilia collection.  The donation included a collection of newspaper articles concerning events at our school from April 1973 to May 1975, a daily announcement sheet dated March 20, 1974, photographs of faculty and students dated 1981 to 1987, a certificate from The Society of Outstanding American High School Students, listing students, dated 1974, and several recent obituaries of Fair Park graduates.  </div> <bR> <div> Alice (1940) and Dallas Greene (1941) made a donation of a poster from the Reunion of the Classes of 1940, 1941, and 1942.</div> <bR> <div> Marty and Thad Mullins made a wonderful donation. Thad's dad was the late Joe Barry Mullins, Band Director at Fair Park from 1944-1946.  While going through his papers, they found items concerning Fair Park High School and contacted the Alumni Association.  Their contribution included the Fair Park High School Concert Band Program dated May 17, 1946, held at the Municipal Auditorium and the Advertising Poster for the May 17, 1946 Band Concert. There was also a collection of photographs of the Fair Park Band.  Marty and Thad were kind enough to include a photograph of Joe Barry Mullins, in his later years, and a copy of his obituary.  Mr. Mullins lived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and died at the age of 81.  He began his career in 1934 teaching younger students and from 1948 to 1980, taught at Louisiana Tech, Northeast Louisiana University and retired from the University of Southern Mississippi. </div> <bR> <div> Stromile Swift (1998) donated a basketball shooting machine to Fair Park.  Stromile left Fair Park for LSU on a basketball scholarship and recently played for the New Jersey Nets.     </div> <bR> <div> Honorary and Memorial Gifts:</div> <div> Memorial Gift Dorothy Crenshaw (1960) from Tommy Crenshaw (1956)</div> <div>            </div> <bR> <div>  </div> <bR> <div> There have been many favorable comments made about the portrait restoration project from students, others at the school and a number of visitors. Glover declaring October 11-18, 2008 as Fair Park High School Week in our city. </div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association thanks Mr. Silvie, the staff, faculty and students for their assistance in preparing for this event and for their attendance on Saturday afternoon. We thank Mrs. Jones, the Hospitality Club members and members of the Fair Park football team for their assistance during the Open House.  See photos of the event on our web site at www.geauxto.com/fpalumni. </div> <bR> <div> Homecoming 2008 was held the week of October 13-17th.  It was a very exciting time on the Reservation! The theme for Homecoming this year was "Rare Gold Found on the Reservation" and the 1952 State Championship Football Team, Cheerleaders and an Assistant Coach for the 1952 team were honored.  It was also the 25th Reunion for the Class of 1983. On the evening of Monday, October 13, 2008 the Coronation of the Homecoming Court was held with the crowning of the Homecoming King, Mr. Morris Claiborne and the Homecoming Queen, Miss Carenn Baylor. </div> <bR> <div> Other Homecoming activities included Monday as Dress Up Day on campus, Tuesday was dress like a Nerd Day, Wednesday was dress like a Senior Citizen Day, Thursday was dress 70s/80s Day and Friday was dress Black and Gold Day. It was a fun time for all!</div> <bR> <div> On Friday, October 17, 2008 the campus took on the look of an Indian Reservation thanks to Mr. Bennett,  Fair Park's art teacher, his students and the devoted work of a parent helper. </div> <bR> <div> The day started with the annual Homecoming Breakfast hosted by the school and held in the cafeteria.  Door prizes were given away.  Each year David Bamberg (1978) makes decorative candles for the drawing and this year was no exception. In addition to the candles, Mrs. Jones, Home Ec. teacher, made "Spirit Towels" for the occasion. A large group attended, including Mrs. Lola May, our Caddo Parish School Board member.  </div> <bR> <div> After breakfast, Coach Bursey invited the former 1952 players, cheerleaders, and former assistant coach to join the current players, cheerleaders, and coaches in the auditorium to get acquainted.  It was a great opportunity to share stories and lessons in life. </div> <bR> <div> Following the visit, many of the 1952 group went to the gym to see their trophy, other trophies, and the new weight room.</div> <bR> <div> Spirits were high in the afternoon after a stirring pep rally was held in the gym.</div> <bR> <div> The day was capped with the Fair Park vs. Haughton football game at Independence Stadium.  On the field at half time the Homecoming court was presented, a special tribute was given to Troy Monsanto (a Fair Park football player injured in a game and later dying from his injury) and the 1952 Players and Cheerleaders were recognized.</div> <bR> <div> Those attending the events were 1952 Assistant Coach Clem Henderson; team manager Robert Reynolds; players Gene Saur, Johnie Crumpler, George Crain, Harley Brown, Charles Farrar, Robert Hearn, Cecil Rhodes, Bobby Stoll, and A. L. Starting in September, the JROTC students are publishing a newsletter titled Pow Wow, JROTC. We thank SFC John Courter for this idea and for sponsoring the JROTC newsletter. As you may notice, the heading of our newsletter has changed.  Since there is currently no school newspaper being published, this is a joint effort to maintain a Fair Park tradition by calling news from Fair Parkers the Pow Wow.  The Association will use the title, Pow Wow, Fair Park High School Alumni Association on all future issue of our newsletter. </div> <bR> <div> Events:</div> <div> Open House</div> <div> By this time, our members and guests have received invitations to the Fair Park High School Alumni Association's Open House.  This will be a celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the opening of our school.  The Open House will be on Saturday, October 11, 2008, from 2:00 - 4:00.  Caddo Parish School Board records indicate that the first day of school at Fair Park High School was September 24, 1928. Our original tile hall floors remain in place.  All of the original closets for teachers and the lab cabinets were removed on the first floor, the new floors installed and all closets and cabinets were saved and returned to their original locations.  Thanks to the dedicated work of everyone involved, all classrooms and the school was ready for the arrival of the students on the first day of school, August 18th. Garrisons Greenwood Gardens Nursery generously donated a large, beautifully colored croton plant for use on the counter in the main office. </div> <bR> <div> On Sunday evening, August 10th, the annual Jump Camp was held in the gym.  This is an opportunity for the freshmen and their parents to come to the school, meet the administration, teachers, and others at the school and learn about the Jump Program, courses being offered and Fair Park High School.  The Alumni Association was invited to have a table, along with the P.T.S.A. and teachers representing each department.  At the Association's table were photos of our completed projects, along with handouts of the Alma Mater and History of Fair Park High School. </div> <bR> <div> The Caddo Parish School Board held a reception on August 12, 2008 for Dr. Gerald Dawkins, the new Superintendent for our parish.  The Alumni Association was represented at the reception.</div> <bR> <div> On the morning of August 15th, as all Fair Park employees entered their morning meeting, Alumni Association board members greeted everyone, giving out red apples as a "Welcome Back to School".  County Market on Greenwood Road generously donated over 150 apples for this occasion.</div> <bR> <div> The first day of school opened with an assembly for all students in the gym. Mrs. Maxile, freshmen teacher, gave the opening remarks.  Coach Bursey followed with an inspiring talk to the students.  The 1985 Fair Park graduate and two-time Olympic Medalist, Hollis Conway, was the guest speaker.  Mr. Conway delivered a motivational talk, urging the students to set their goals high and strive to achieve them.  Mr. Robert Silvie, Acting Principal, closed the program by reviewing the school rules and dress code for the students.  After the assembly, the students found their way to their classes and started their assignments.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park High School Alumni Association now has an office at the school.  It is located in the area with the Counselors.  We thank Mr. Silvie, Acting Principal, for making this possible. Rogers Hampton, Class of 1952, was inducted into the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions.  Rogers was a star athlete in his years at Fair Park High School.  Congratulations, Rogers!</div> <bR> <div> On a recent trip to Washington D. C., Frances and Tommy Owens met a proud young Marine.  In visiting with the young man they discovered a connection, all were from Shreveport and all had attended Fair Park High School. </div> <div>     </div> <bR> <div> Event:</div> <div> Mark your calendars.  Homecoming at Fair Park High School will be Friday, October 17, 2008. These items belonged to the late Donald E. Wolfe, M. D. They had previously donated his 1946 and 1947 Sequoyah yearbooks.</div> <bR> <div> J. Hail Fair Park High School, We Your Praises Sing …..As we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Fair Park High School, let us take a moment to reflect on the history of our great school! </div> <bR> <div> Looking through the collection of yearbooks and memory books in our school library, one  comes to the realization of how many students have entered the doors of Fair Park High School and left these halls to move on into the world and assume our places.  Our lives have been enriched by the people we met while attending Fair Park - those dedicated teachers, administration and staff and by the experiences we shared on this campus. Long lasting friendships have been formed during our years at Fair Park and many have met their future spouses and courted under the oak trees here on these grounds.  Countless hours of classroom work, studying, and planning for careers have been spent in our historic Fair Park High School.  </div> <bR> <div> Oh, the fun we have had during our time at Fair Park!!!  There were so many opportunities for involvement - ROTC, sports, championship teams, band, orchestra, choir, student government, clubs and organizations, to name a few. There were homecomings, reservation days, pep rallies, and other special events, sporting events to attend, Fair Park vs. Byrd games, the band and orchestra trips we participated in, school projects, the school newspaper, yearbooks and memory books, dances, senior ring day and, of course, graduation events and graduation day.  All of these and much, much more made up the fabric of our lives at Fair Park High School.  Our Alma Mater, May We Ever Cling…..</div> <bR> <div> Remember the outstanding principals, teachers, counselors, staff, parents and so many others, all willing to help guide us and lend a helping hand through our high school years.  Many of the Fair Park teachers were there when the doors of our school opened for the first time and remained there until their retirements.  There were a number of students that graduated from Fair Park and returned to teach and serve in other positions in the school, spending many years of their lives in dedicated service at Fair Park. Additionally, there are many second generation Fair Parkers among our graduates. </div> <bR> <div> Young men and women have graduated from Fair Park, entered the military and served our country bravely in wars and in peacetime. Through the years, a number, far too large to count, have graduated from Fair Park and gone on to become business people, educators, community leaders, city and state officials, and entered many others professions. Fair Park has a very rich history!</div> <bR> <div> Attached is the history of our school.  The first section was written by Edith Bailey and appeared in the first Sequoyah in 1931.  Edith was the first editor of a Fair Park yearbook, president of the Class of 1931 and later returned to Fair Park to teach English.  The latter section of the history was written by Clem Henderson.  It was his dream to come to Fair Park and he did that, spending his entire career at Fair Park High School.  He arrived on campus in the fall of 1948 as a teacher and served as a coach, assistant principal, principal and later formed the Fair Park High School Alumni Association.  As you read the history, reflect on your memories of Fair Park days and enjoy those "precious memories".</div> <bR> <div> Through the years graduates have given and worked quietly to improve the lives of our students and the school. Honorary and memorial gifts and general fund donations were given to aid our work at the school and to fund expenses.</div> <bR> <div> Our memorabilia collection continues to increase. Only the classroom floors are being replaced, not the beautiful tile floors in our hallways.  Before the work started this year, the Alumni Association and teachers were very interested in saving the teacher's closet and shelves in each classroom.  These are part of the original building. Additional, we were interested in saving the extensive glass front cabinets, drawers, and shelves  many of you will remembers as part of the science labs on the first floor.  The Alumni Association and teachers, working with Mr. Daigle, Mrs. Lola May, our School Board member; Caddo Parish school officials, the contractor, and the job supervisor, have saved all of the above mentioned cabinetwork. The closets, cabinets, drawers, and shelves will be returned to their proper place after the new flooring is installed. Ed has now found and donated the 1931 graduation invitation and State High School Diploma belonging to his sister, Mildred Louise Sims.  With this donation, the Association's collection now includes the class ring, yearbook, graduation invitation and diploma from our first graduating class.  </div> <bR> <div> Last month, James Milton Harper (1942) donated yearbooks and a number of Fair Park items belonging to his sister, Helen Ruth Harper Gallien.  Jim has found and donated his sister's State High School Diploma to add to our collection.  </div> <bR> <div> Mrs. Maxine Black (faculty 1958-1962) also contributed to our collection by donating photographs and newspaper articles from her days at Fair Park as the sponsor of the cheerleaders.</div> <bR> <div> Jerry Montgomery, of Chevyland and a Byrd High School graduate recently made a donation of a baseball batting cage to Fair Park High School.  It should be noted that Jerry's dad was a graduate of our school.  John LeBlanc, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Loyola College Prep made the arrangements for this donation.   </div> <bR> <div> For a number of years George Khoury (1946) has been generously donating to education.  He is a great supporter of the Fair Park ROTC and for many years has made contributions to our ROTC program. Recently, George made another, much needed, donation. This is a complete review of every aspect of our school.  We appreciate being included in this process.  Everyone attending found it to be very interesting.  The Alumni Association received many compliments on our work at Fair Park and on the many items on display at the school. Fair Park High School received a very favorable review from this accreditation group.</div> <bR> <div> Rogers Hampton (1952) has been selected for induction into the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions. He will be inducted along with other "Champions" representing their athletic excellence and contribution to sports in East Texas and the Ark-La-Tex area.  Rogers was an outstanding athlete at Fair Park.  The induction ceremony will be Saturday, August 16, 2008.  On behalf of the Fair Park High School Alumni Association, we congratulate Rogers E. Hampton on this wonderful honor!</div> <bR> <div> Alumni Association Event:</div> <div> The second Alumni Association Luncheon for Members was held on April 19, 2008 at Chester Kelley's Crescent Landing Catfish Restaurant. A part of Maxine's donation was the obituary for Ernest S. "Stinky" Davis (1940), and a photograph of the Monsour brothers in their Fair Park days.</div> <bR> <div> Josephine Butler Allen (1945 graduate, faculty, and administrator) donated her large collection of obituaries of Fair Park graduates, a collection of photographs of Fair Park days, a collection of newspaper articles concerning Fair Park High School, teacher's roster from Fair Park, and the roster from the Forties Reunion. </div> <bR> <div> James Milton Harper (1942) contributed yearbooks belonging to his late sister, Helen Ruth Harper Gallien, from 1936, 1937, and 1938.  Also in the collection, belonging to Jim's sister, is the Graduation Program from the Class of 1936, the 1936 newspaper photograph of the Fair Park High School Pep Squad, the Program for the Class Play of the Class of 1938, and the newspaper article and photo of the cast of the 1938 play.  Another part of this collection is the Fair Park vs. Byrd Football Program from 1937 (in the shape of a football).  A special point of interest, Helen Ruth Harper Gallien was Miss Shreveport in 1938.  In addition, Jim donated his own 1939 and 1942 yearbooks to our collection. </div> <bR> <div> June Morrow Levasseur's (1935) contribution to the Association was the Program from the 60th Reunion of the Class of 1935 and the class roster for that reunion.</div> <bR> <div> Betty "Beth" Bass Stone (1942) and her husband Harry have donated Harry's Louisiana State University ROTC uniform with a forige', indicating Honor Guard from 1940-1943.  Additionally, they have donated two of Harry's World War II Navy uniforms and a Guinea Gold newspaper from 1944.  He was on active duty from 1943 to 1946.  </div> <bR> <div> Our most sincere thanks to each donor for your generous gifts and your support of the Fair Park High School Alumni Association and in turn, our beloved school, its students, faculty, staff and the administration. </div> <bR> <div> Around the Reservation:</div> <div> A Beautification Committee has been formed by a group of teachers at the school.  Heading the committee are Mr. Bennett and Mr. Morris.  The Alumni Association was invited to work with this group. We would like to thank our School Board member, Mrs. Lola May, for her recent efforts to secure a donation of mulch.  Teachers and student volunteered to put out the mulch and will care for certain sections of the grounds.  Denyse Cummins (1970), LSU AgCenter, Area Horticulture Agent was invited to look at our grounds and will offer advise on planting and care of plants.  We thank Denyse for her time and being so willing to help.  </div> <bR> <div> Recently Mr. Bennett, our art teacher, used the library to exhibit art work done by his students.  </div> <div> The Fair Park High School library is a beautiful area of our building. It is very well run by Mrs. Prealow, Librarian, Mrs. McInnis, Assistant Librarian, and with the assistance of Nicole Bradford.  See photos on web site.</div> <bR> <div> As you may recall, the Alumni Association funded three trips for the band earlier this year. Our Band Director, Mr. Jenkins, reports that on the trip to Grambling University five of our students received four year scholarships. Students receiving scholarships are Ophelia James (trombone), Starla Edwards (trumpet), LaDonna Williams (flute), Joshua Cannon (baritone), and DeAngelo Silas (percussion).  On the trip to the District Festival, our band received a high score for sight reading and performance.  The results from the trip to Jackson State are not known at this writing.       </div> <bR> <div> One member of the senior class, Ophelia James, representing Fair Park and the Caddo Career and Technology Center, recently presented her senior project in fashion design and merchandising to a panel of experts and received very high acclaim.  The specific subject of her project was the House of Chanel.  In addition to her research on the topic, Ophelia constructed a Chanel ensemble to accompany her presentation.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park JROTC Awards were presented on April 9, 2008. Cathy and Wade Bonds provided Snicker candy bars for all employees of the school with a note reading "Education is Nothing to Snicker About" attached with black and gold ribbons. On the second day, large red apples were given to all employees. These apples were donated and delivered by Myrna and Leo Sanford. This is the second year the Sanfords have made this donation, along with their many other contributions to Fair Park High School through the years. The following two days the Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) furnished treats and a luncheon. We appreciate and thank all donors.  On behalf of the Alumni Association, we would like to express our appreciation to all of the employees of Fair Park High School.  Thank you for your dedication to our students and school.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park High School Alumni Association Archives Collection has been established at Louisiana State University at Shreveport.  The collection is housed in the Noel Memorial Library on the LSUS campus.  A point of interest, at one time, Mr. Noel was an English teacher at Fair Park High School. Their gift was the donation of the 1946 and 1947 yearbooks belonging to Donald Wolfe, M.D. (1947), her late husband and their Dad.  </div> <bR> <div> Mrs. Martha Pike Pruett (1935) made another contribution to our collection.  Mrs. Pruett donated a Pow Wow dated 1934 and a Pow Wow dated 1963.  The 1963 newspaper contained an article about her son, Jimmy Pruett. In March, Dr. Sandra McCalla (1957) donated funds to replace the blinds in the reading labs.  The blinds were badly needed to make light control possible for students working on the computers in these rooms.  Dr. McCalla, we thank you for your very generous donation and your continued support of Fair Park. </div> <bR> <div> Weight Room at Fair Park High School </div> <div> In the fall of 2007, the Alumni Association was asked by Mr. Daigle, Principal, if we could help with the Fair Park weight room. The weight room at Fair Park was in poor condition.  It was a very large project for a newly formed organization.  With hard work, dedication, and the assistance of very generous donors, the weight room at Fair Park High School will soon be completed. All funds have been raised for this project.</div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association members working on this project were Leo Sanford (1946), James Powell (1945), and Clem Henderson (Faculty-Administration).  The process started with a tour, arranged by Alan Carter, Supervisor of Athletics for Caddo Parish, of the LSUS Athletic Facility. The tour was conducted by Doug Robinson (1961), Athletic Director at LSUS and former Fair Park coach, with in-put from Dr. Tim Winter, Professor and Chair Kinesiology Department at LSUS and Dr. Kyle Pierce, Associate Professor of Kinesiology at LSUS. Also, a tour of the Loyola College Prep Athletic Complex was given by John LeBlanc, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of the Loyola College Prep Athletic Complex. </div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association worked with Mr. Daigle, Lent Bursey, Head Football Coach and the Fair Park coaching staff to determine the specific needs for our school.  To start our project, there was a very generous anonymous donation. With the help of our dedicated Caddo Parish School Board member, Mrs. Lola May, working with Alan Carter, Supervisor of Athletics for Caddo Parish, we were able to obtain numerous pieces of new weight equipment for our room. The next contribution came from Willis Knighton Health Care Center. Willis Knighton contributed two commercial grade treadmills.  Stromile Swift (2000) very generously donated three stationary bicycles, a Smith Machine, and dumbbells for our project.  Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barney (both 1943) very generously donated funds for half inch, black, interlocking flooring for the 50'x50' room and three sets of Olympic weights.  Don "Moon" Mullins (1957) completed our project with his very generous donation of funds to provide two inch blinds to cover the eleven windows in our weight room.</div> <bR> <div> Our most sincere thank you goes to each individual contributing to this project and our corporate neighbor.  A great deal of time, effort and money went into this project to provide a first class weight room for our students. All were so willing to go the extra mile and did go the extra mile to help. Your kindness and generosity will always be remembered.  To complete such a large project in this short period of time is a real blessing. This beautiful facility adds a great deal to the lives of our students and instills even more pride in our beloved Fair Park High School. (When work is completed, photos will be attached)</div> <bR> <div> Around the Reservation:</div> <div> The annual Fair Park High School Football Banquet was held on March 4, 2008.  Mr. Daigle and Coach Bursey used this occasion to honor the 2007-2008 Football Team members and the Alumni Association for our work at the school.</div> <bR> <div> The event was held in the auxiliary gym with the tables beautifully decorated.  The delicious meal was prepared by teachers and staff and the tables were served by members of the Fair Park High School Hospitality Club.  Our ROTC Color Guard also preformed. </div> <bR> <div> Trophies were awarded to players and the letter jackets (funded by Jane Caruthers, Don "Moon" Mullins and Martha and Clem Henderson) were presented to the players. Earlier, Mr. Daigle and Coach Bursey had suggested the establishment of the Fair Park High School Alumni Association Award.  A plaque will be hung in the main office of our school and each year the recipient's name will be added to the plaque. In the future, the recipient will be a football player exemplifying good citizenship, good sportsmanship, academic achievement, and loyalty to Fair Park High School. On this first year of the award, Mr. Daigle and Coach Bursey decided to honor Alumni Association members. Those receiving special recognition were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barney, Clem Henderson, Leo Sanford, and Cathy Ridley Bonds.</div> <div>  </div> <div> All of the alumni felt the genuine welcome and the sincerity of the remarks made by Coach Bursey, Mr. Daigle, the teachers, staff, and students present at the event. This scrapbook was compiled by Carolyn's mother. The first article in the collection is dated November 3, 1947 and ends in late May of 1949 when she graduated from Fair Park.  For many years, a student from Fair Park and a student from Byrd were selected to write a newspaper article about events at their schools.  Carolyn's collection offers a weekly look at life at Fair Park High School.  We are so thankful Mrs. Hopkins took the time to keep this scrapbook for her daughter. It will forever be a part of Fair Park history.</div> <bR> <div> As always, we sincerely appreciate the donations to our memorabilia collection.  Each gift is such a treasure!  Thank you for your gifts. </div> <bR> <div> There are some very nice benches on our campus between the main building and the gym.  They are metal with a black protective coating. We were in need of four matching trash containers. Thanks to two very generous donations, this need has been met.  Mr. Forest Dunn contributed funds to purchase one trash container and Calumet Lubricant Company contributed funds for three more containers.  They have been ordered and will soon be in place.  We thank Mr. Dunn and Calumet for their contributions and appreciate their support of our school.  </div> <bR> <div> The Alumni Association Board recently voted to fund three Fair Park band trips.  The fall of the year is the usual fund raising time for the band.  The monies raised during this period would normally fund these trips.  Due to the extended illness of our Band Director in the fall, the band was unable to participate in their normal fund raising activities. The three trips funded include a clinic at Grambling State University, a clinic at Jackson State University, and the District Festival Concert.  Attending these events at the universities enables our students to play under college directors and have an opportunity to receive scholarships.  We are very thankful that Mr. Jenkins has returned to work and is able to continue the outstanding job he is doing with our band.   </div> <bR> <div> <B>Around the Reservation: </B></div> <div> In mid-February, well known newspaper sports writer and author Jerry Byrd (1953) spoke to Mrs. Palmer-White's Creative Writing Class. Do you remember the ribbons we purchased on game days and wore pinned to our shirts and blouses in support of our team?  The cost of a ribbon in 1935 was 10 cents.</div> <bR> <div> The above gifts and all memorabilia donations play an important part in documenting the history of our school.  When visiting the school, I often hear comments about how much the staff, students, and visitors are enjoying the items on display.  We sincerely thank Mrs. Pruett, Mr. Thomas and all of our donors for preserving so many historical items and for their generosity in sharing them with us.</div> <bR> <div> As many of you will remember, there was a great rivalry between Fair Park and Byrd the first forty years of our history. In late 2007, a Byrd graduate, who had married a Fair Park graduate a number of years ago, wanted to do something very special for our school. Several ideas were mentioned and the project selected by the individual was the mounting and framing of the 44" x 96" photo of our 2006 State Championship Basketball Team.  The photo has been mounted and beautifully framed and will soon hang in our gym. This is a wonderful gift to our school and will be a source of pride and encouragement to all for many years to come.  It is a fine example of the respect and love that has come from one of Shreveport's great school rivalries. We sincerely thank this Byrd donor for the very generous and meaningful gift to Fair Park High School.  </div> <bR> <div> Two of our corporate friends recently made donations. Stein Mart contributed a decorative covered container and Hobby Lobby donated two sets of bookends for use in our reading labs.  We appreciate their donations.  </div> <bR> <div> AROUND THE RESERVATION:   </div> <bR> <div> On February 3, 2008, members of the Fair Park High School Band, Directed by Mr. Clifford Jenkins, preformed at the opening of the exhibit entitled The American Soldier from the Civil War to the War in Iraq.  This exhibit is on display from February 3, 2008 - April 27, 2008 at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, 3015 Greenwood Road, Shreveport, Louisiana, 318-632-2020.</div> <bR> <div> The Fair Park Hospitality Club, sponsored by Mrs. Linda Jones, has been working on another community service project.  The students have made hundreds of Valentine cards to be placed on the meal trays of patients at the V. A. Hospital.  These cards are certain to be appreciated by the veterans and we applaud them for their efforts.</div> <div>   </div> <div> As mentioned in a previous newsletter, the Fair Park ROTC had an important briefing and troop inspection recently.  The review was held at the Rifle Range on the Fair Park campus. This event was conducted by the ROTC Cadet Commander from the Regional Headquarters. The outcome of this inspection will determine the standing of our ROTC for the next three years and the results will be known by mid-February. It is hoped that our ROTC will attain the rank of Honor Unit with Distinction - Gold Star. There were a number of parents present for the briefing along with two members of the Alumni Association. It is interesting to note that our ROTC instructors had gone the extra mile by going to Bethune Middle School to recruit students for future membership in the Fair Park ROTC.  These students were bused to Fair Park the morning of the briefing to observe and briefly participate by reciting a drill taught to them by our instructors. The inspecting commander mentioned being impressed by the recruitment and attendance of these students at the briefing. Those present were extremely impressed with the professionalism shown by our ROTC and staff. It was obvious that much hard work and preparation had been done by the ROTC instructors and students.  Congratulations on a job very well done!  See photos below. The selected textbooks will be used for the next seven years in our state.  Reviewing three pallets of textbooks takes a great deal of time. Your gifts and your generosity will always be treasured and remembered. </div> <bR> <div> On November 30, 2007, the Fair Park High School Alumni Association hosted a Reception and Tour of Fair Park High School for Caddo Parish School Board Members and other dignitaries.  It was an opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of our administration, staff, faculty, students and show the beauty of our campus and school.  At the reception, a copy of the original construction documents for Fair Park High School was presented as a gift to our school from the Alumni Association.  These documents were available for viewing by our guests and are now in our school library.  The recently established memorabilia collection was also on display. Additionally, the tour was an occasion for visitors to see the new reading labs furnished by the Association.  We thank Mr. Daigle, the staff, faculty, and the Hospitality Club for their assistance with the reception.  Our thanks go to Coach and Mrs. Henderson for their donation to this project. </div> <bR> <div> Their support is greatly appreciated. Photos of this event are on our web site, www.geauxto.com/fpalumni.</div> <bR> <div> We would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Flakes and the entire Custodial Staff at Fair Park High School for the superb job they do in keeping our campus and buildings beautiful.  We appreciate their diligence and thank them for a job very well done!    </div> <bR> <div> Recently we had an opportunity to meet and get acquainted with Mrs. Linda Jones, the Home Economics teacher at Fair Park.  In addition to her teaching duties, Mrs. Jones is the sponsor of the Hospitality Club.  The Hospitality Club is a group of approximately thirty students, male and female, that assist with many school related functions. Each month these students participate in at least one community service project.  Mrs. Jones and a number of the club members very generously gave of their time and skills, staying late on Friday evening, to assisted the Alumni Association with the above mentioned reception.  In December, club members supplied the V. A. Hospital with handmade Christmas cards.  These cards were placed on the meal trays delivered to the patients.  This group also aided in the collection of two large barrels of canned goods and staples to be donated to the area food bank in time for the holidays.  They routinely support an Army unit from Ft. Polk, now stationed in Iraq, with care packages. In mid-December, Mrs. Jones and the Hospitality Club hosted a Christmas luncheon. Guests at the luncheon included members of the Fair Park staff, faculty, and Alumni Association Board Members. Mrs. Jones received food donations from local markets for the meal and under her supervision, the students prepared and served a delicious Christmas dinner.  We thank them for their generosity and hospitality! </div> <bR> <div> While visiting with Major Irvin of the Fair Park ROTC, we learned that each year the ROTC collects items and donates thirty food baskets to needy families in the community. When attending an event at Fair Park High School, one is often greeted by a polite and well dressed member of the ROTC.  We thank them for their very good work! </div> <bR> <div>  On Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 9:00 a.m., the Fair Park ROTC will have an important briefing and troop inspection.  The review will be held at the Rifle Range on the Fair Park campus. This event will be conducted by the ROTC Cadet Commander from the Regional Headquarters. The results of this inspection will determine the standing of our ROTC for the next three years. With hard work and preparation, our ROTC hopes to again attain the rank of Honor Unit with Distinction - Gold Star. Our faculty and ROTC did an outstanding job! As always, the ROTC plays and important part in life at Fair Park.  There are approximately 250 students currently participating in our ROTC program. See photos under Reservation Events. </div> <bR> <div> The first Alumni Association Members Luncheon was held on November 10th, at Chester Kelley's Crescent Landing Catfish Restaurant. Approximately fifty people were in attendance, with members representing the classes from the 1930's to the 1980's.  It was an excellent opportunity to visit with classmates and meet other alumni.  To Chester Kelley, our very special thanks for offering his restaurant, his help in planning the event, the delicious food and the hospitality, and to his staff for the wonderful service.  Thank you to all that attended, it was a great afternoon. See photos under Reservation Events.</div> <bR> <div> Earlier this year, the Alumni Association Board approved a project to raise funds for Letter Jackets for students with two years of participation in a sport or band.  We are very grateful for the donations made by Jane Rhodes Caruthers (1958), Don "Moon" Mullins (1957), and Coach and Mrs. Clem Henderson (FPHS Faculty).  Their very generous contributions have completely funded the Letter Jackets for this year. Again, restoring a tradition at Fair Park High School and having immeasurable benefits for our students.  We thank you for your gifts.    </div> <bR> <div> Our friends at Libbey Glass have made another generous donation to the Home Economics Department at Fair Park, with their gift of a glass punch bowl with ladle and one hundred small glass dessert bowls.  We sincerely thank them for this donation and for the kindness of their employees.</div> <bR> <div> In mid-November, a number of items were placed in our memorabilia cases in the main entry hall of the school.  These items included the Sequoyah from the first graduating class in 1931, photos of the 1931 class ring, and Pow Wows from the 1930's and early 1940's, all mentioned in earlier newsletters.  To add to our collection, a donation was made of documents, photos, a plaque, and newspaper articles pertaining to the placement of the Star on the Walk of Fame, in Shreveport, for Faron Young (1951).  These items were contributed by Faron's Fair Park High School friend, Irv Heard (1952).  Irv, with the help of others, worked diligently to obtain the star to honor Faron.  That star was dedicated in December 2006. Irv, thank you for what you did for your friend and we appreciate your gift to the Association.</div> <bR> <div> Other wonderful keepsakes were given to the Alumni Association this month.  We sincerely thank Leon Burns for the special gift of his 1934 Sequoyah.  Martha Pike Pruett (1935) donated her 1933, 1934, and 1935 yearbooks. May, for weight room equipment. Mrs. May submitted the request to the Caddo Parish School Board Office, the request was approved and the order has been placed for 3 Power Racks, 3 Incline Benches, 2 Leg Curls, and 4 Weight Racks for our facility.</div> <bR> <div> Libbey Glass Company recently made a wonderful donation to the Home Economics Department at Fair Park.  This gift consisted of over 150 glass hot/cold weighted mugs, over 200 eight inch glass plates, 6 glass serving pitchers, and glass bowls. The Alumni Association thanks Libbey Glass for their donation and for the kindness shown to us by their employees.</div> <bR> <div> A 4'x 10', vinyl banner will soon be hanging in our gym. Our thanks go to Jack Williams (Class of 1951) for generously funding this project. Soon, we will be proudly displaying our 1931 Sequoyah, diploma, and class ring in the cases in the main hall. These display cases will also provide a place of honor for other donated items. To date, we have received a very generous donation from the Classes of 1940, 1941, and 1942 to aid in the funding of this project.   </div> <bR> <div> The second project was to complete the reading labs by providing bookcases and baskets of greenery for these rooms.  The reading labs are two classrooms with new computers and desks in a living room setting.  The original Alumni Association had received a donation of new sofas, chairs, end tables and rugs for each room.  We have received another special donation of two beautiful bookcases for each room and baskets of greenery.  This recent donation will soon be in place. </div> <bR> <div> Our third project was the addition of glass shelves in several of our trophy cases in the main entry hall of the school and the replacement of broken shelves in the trophy cases in the gym. This project has been funded and will soon be completed.  </div> <bR> <div> The fourth project was a "Welcome Back to School" for all employees of Fair Park High School. County Market generously donated over 100 large red apples for this occasion. On August 13, 2007, a table, with our Fair Park table cloth, was in place outside the main doors to the auditorium.  There was a sign on the table thanking the employees of Fair Park High School for their dedication and service to the school from the Alumni Association, surrounded by apples.  Members of the Board of Directors were present to give an apple to each employee as they enter the auditorium for their meeting.  A great way to start the new school year! </div> <bR> <div> The first class to graduate from Fair Park High School was in 1931.  There has been a very special offer from Ed Brun (1942) of a class ring, yearbook, and diploma from 1931. These items belonged to Ed's sister, Mildred Louise Sims. In addition, we have been offered several copies of 1930's Pow Wows.  What a wonderful gift to our school!   </div> <bR> <div> MHSM Architects made a contribution to our school, this month, of a high quality, five foot, Formica topped, folding table. High School Alumni Association hosted a Reception and Tour of Fair Park High School for Caddo Parish School Board Members and other dignitaries.  It was an opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of our administration, staff, faculty, students, and show the beauty of our campus and school. At the reception, a copy of the original construction documents for Fair Park High School was presented as a gift to our school from the Alumni Association.  These were available for viewing by our guests. The recently established memorabilia collection was also on display. Additionally, the tour was an occasion for visitors to see the new reading labs furnished by the Alumni Association.</div> <bR> <div> We thank Mr. Daigle for his support and assistance.  We also thank the staff and faculty for their cooperation.</div> <bR> <div> As seen in the photos below, the Custodial Staff does a superb job of keeping our campus and buildings beautiful. Approximately fifty people were in attendance, with members representing the classes from the 1930's to the 1980's.  It was an excellent opportunity to visit with classmates and meet other alumni.
