The Cornstalk Hotel
History alive is what you have when you stay at the Cornstalk! In the early 1800's, it was the home of Judge Francois Xavier-Martin, first Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court and the author of the first history of Louisiana. It is the place where Harriet Beecher Stowe stopped and was inspired to write Uncle Tom's Cabin from the sights and sounds she experienced at the nearby slave markets.
Surrounded by a unique and intricate 165 year-old "cornstalk" cast iron fence (from whence comes the name of the hotel), the Cornstalk is located in the heart of the Vieux Carre on Rue Royale, a block over from the infamous Rue Bourbon, affording guests the closeness of antique and gift shops, riverboats, etc. during the day and the music and entertainment of the French Quarter at night. Tours of all kinds are available at the hotel desk, and Cornstalk guests will find themselves within walking distance of everything in the French Quarter, including the Riverwalk and the Street Cars on Canal Street.
The famous Cornstalk Fence is truly a landmark that in itself has helped make the old French Quarter famous. Natives and tourists alike never cease to wonder at its beautifully ornate and delicate iron lace handicraft. Ripe ears of corn on their stalks are seemingly ready for the harvest, each kernel a work of art. Pumpkins form the base of the massive iron columns around which are entwined the pumpkin vines and the leaves and morning glories. There is a lovely old story of an early owner who brought his young bride to live here far from her native Iowa. To soften some of her loneliness for the waving fields of corn back home, he caused this replica to be made in graceful iron so that from her front gallery she could forever see something of her native land.
Passersby will often see Cornstalk guests sitting in rocking chairs on the porch, watching the never ceasing array of life passing up and down Royal Street. Elegant accommodations in the heart of it all! A very authentic way to experience New Orleans and the Vieux Carre in an historical context.
A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily.
