The Gumbo Shop is located in one of America’s most historic neighborhoods – the “Vieux Carre” (French for “old square”), also known as the French Quarter. It is, you might say, at ground zero when it comes to a quintessential New Orleans experience. Located just a half block from the historic St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square, you can hear the cathedral bells tolling as you dine in the courtyard beneath the shade of huge banana trees.

Open since the 1920’s as a restaurant, this Louisiana Colonial townhouse is one of a handful of 18th century buildings left in the Quarter. The structure was built in 1795 to replace a building that was destroyed in the devastating 1794 fire that started around the corner from the restaurant and almost wiped out the city.

Ristorante Carmelo's buillding at 541 Decatur dates back to 1796. The current renovation took place in 1988-1989 and won the Vieux Carre Recognition Award in 1989.

Some of the Signature Dishes at Carmelo's include an appetizer of Carpaccio (a thin sliced aged prime filet topped with parmesan cheese, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, and capers), the Insalata Caprese salad (fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and fresh basil), and the Piatta Della Casa, Lobster Fra Diavolo (a whole Maine lobster in a spicy marinara served over linguine garnished with a clam, mussel, shrimp, and calamari).
