Commemorating Dear Classmates Who Have Gone On
John L. Pickering
Marilyn Register Whitney
With sadness, we are writing you today to let you know that our beloved mother, Marilyn Whitney, passed away in the early morning hours of April 14, 2010. We appreciate all your thoughts, condolences, and prayers...this has meant so much to us.
Below is the obituary and I will write a personal note below!
Marilyn Register Chewning Whitney, 74, formerly of Broomfield, went Home to get hugs from Jesus around 12:30 a.m. on April 14, 2010 at Longmont United Hospital.
She was born on September 4, 1935, in Mansfield, LA. to Joseph H. Register and Lennie Inez Kolb.
She graduated from Fair Park High School in Shreveport, LA in 1953, and from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL in 1978.
She married Urban Leroy Chewning (Roy) in 1955, had three children (Karen Mallory, Kathy Resmondo and Ricky Chewning), and they later divorced.
She moved to Broomfield in 1992 where she met and married Ralph Whitney in May 1993.
Marilyn had resided at The Peaks Care Center in Longmont since Aug. 31, 2009. Previously she lived in her home in Broomfield or Broomfield Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was a Christian and attended First Baptist Church in Broomfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Ralph Whitney.
She is survived by daughter, Karen Mallory (husband Larry, grandchildren - Kody, Keenan, Keeli & Kiersten), of Berthoud, CO; daughter, Kathy Resmondo (husband Lamarr, grandson - Davis), of Wylie, TX; sister, JoAnn Gaines (husband Fred), of Pensacola, FL
An informal gathering will be held on Wednesday, April 21st from 3:00 - 5:30 pm at Calvary Church in Longmont, CO in the Fireside Room.
She was cremated and a private family service will be held this summer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the your local church or the SCPA in her memory.
PERSONAL NOTE:
Mom has been in and out of rehab for a couple of years and had had multiple infections. Most recently, she had lost the use of her hands, which to someone who was so crafty, was a very hard thing to deal with. She discovered on April 2nd that she had a compression in her discs of her neck and spine and made the decision to try surgery to hopefully have use of her hands again. She had surgery on Monday, April 5th and then had to have another surgery on Wed. April 7th but unfortunately her body was just too weak to fight all the infections. I (Karen) was notified on Tues. morning early that it would not be long before "she'll be going home!". I arrived about 8:30 a.m. and we stayed until about 10:15 p.m.
Her cousin, Sandy Young (and her family), was able to visit her in January.
Kathy, her daughter, came in February but unfortunately mom was in the hospital. The good part is that Kathy had a big room to which to visit with her.
Her cousin, Bev Eadie, got in a GREAT visit in March. They were able to discuss alot of family genealogy and we later found out that this meant alot to mom! Thank you Bev!
These visits were all in the midst of chronic UTI's where she would go into what Larry (Karen's husband) termed LaLaLand. While in LaLaLand, she was able to revisit her childhood, make up VERY believable adventures and stories (like she went camping last November!) , be very convincing that it was 1929 and then 5 minutes later it was 1945. It was like a dementia state which was sad but we have to laugh and say, it WAS very entertaining. My sister, Kathy, got a big kick out of me telling her 'mom's tales'! At least, we were able to have alot of laughter thru it all! We kept asking her how old she was and at one point, she said to me "Well, how old are you?" I replied that I was 49 and would soon be 50 (yikes!) to which she replied...."well.. that makes me 45!" I told her "no way possible!"
While at the Peaks she made a few friends and won over the hearts of several of the nurses, CNA's and administrators. It blessed my heart so much to have 6 of them come to the hospital in the afternoon and help me know how to make mom comfortable. My friend, Heidi, a nurse, was also there and rubbed mom's head and talked gently with her.
After I made the painful decision to go home and rest, Larry, Keeli and I told her "time to go Hug Jesus for us" and said our goodbyes! Mom passed peacefully and comfortable about 12:30 a.m. Wed. morning.
I've shared with Kathy that the one big lesson that I've learned thru all this is to give LOTS of hugs! I'm not a typical "touchy" person but I've learned you NEED those hugs!
